At approximately 11:45 a.m. Saturday, January 9, the Arkansas State Police, Pope County Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas Highway Police and Pope County EMS were dispatched to the rest area located at the 72 mile marker westbound on Interstate 40 after Pope County 911 operators received a report of a welfare concern. The 911 caller reported to dispatch that a subject was in a vehicle parked at the rest stop who appeared to be unconscious and would not respond.
Upon the arrival of an ASP trooper and Pope County EMS personnel, they made contact with the subject and determined the individual was deceased.
At that time, the rest area was closed and a perimeter was roped off by law enforcement. Officials with the Pope County Coroner’s Office were also requested to respond to the scene and the investigation of the unattended death then began.
After conducting a preliminary investigation on scene, the body was transported to the Pope County Coroner’s Office. Investigators remained on scene for some time continuing their investigation and at approximately 4 p.m., the rest area was reopened.
The identity of the individual has not been released. The body has been sent to the State Crime Lab to be positively identified and to determine cause of death.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing but investigators do not suspect foul play in the incident.
