Just before 8 p.m. New Year’s Day, (Friday night, January 1st) the Dardanelle Police Department was dispatched to the 1000 block of North 8th Avenue in Dardanelle on a report of a disturbance with a weapon. Upon the arrival of a Dardanelle Police Department officer, he attempted to make contact with the individuals involved in the disturbance. Upon making contact, the officer discovered that one of the individuals, later determined to be the victim, had sustained a laceration to his arm. The officer quickly radioed his dispatcher and requested the response of Pinnacle EMS. EMS was dispatched to the scene, but due to the scene not being secured, they were instructed to respond to the general area of the location. After making brief contact with the victim and requesting the response of medical responders, the officer attempted to apprehend the suspect who remained armed with a weapon described to be a machete. After the suspect was given several opportunities to comply, the officer advised dispatch and additional responding officers that he had the suspect at gunpoint and he was not complying with his instructions. After the suspect was given a final chance to surrender to police, he again refused to comply with the officer’s commands and the officer deployed his taser. Once officers were able to disarm the suspect, identified as 28-year-old David Espinoza, they placed him into custody. Once officers had secured the scene, EMS was advised they could safely proceed to their patient. After being evaluated by Pinnacle EMS, the victim was transported for further treatment for the injury he had sustained in the incident. Espinoza was then transported to the Yell County Law Enforcement Center where he was booked and a felony hold was placed on him. Espinoza is being held on the charges of Battery in the First Degree and Resisting Arrest or Refusal to Submit to Arrest. At the time of this story, he remains in custody but bond has not been set. According to the Dardanelle Police Department, “Officers were dispatched to a residence on North 8th Avenue following a report of a domestic disturbance between two roommates. The suspect involved in the disturbance was arrested and transported to the Yell County Law Enforcement Center and will face felony charges.” The victim, who was not identified, was transported by EMS for treatment of injuries that were described to be “non-life threatening.” The injuries the victim sustained in the incident and his current condition are unknown. No officers were injured in the incident and at this time, the investigation is ongoing.
