The Dardanelle Sand Lizards couldn't keep pace with the Gosnell Pirates on Friday at Keenan Field as they fell 48-26 in the second round of the Class 4A State Tournament.
Dardanelle (3-4) trailed 26-13 at halftime. Gosnell drew first blood with 4:50 left in the first quarter after they capped an 80-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass. The Pirates missed the 2-point conversion to make it 6-0.
Gosnell took its next possession to the red zone, but Drew Vega's interception prevented a touchdown and led to the Sand Lizards' first score of the evening.
Vega later tore off a 36-yard run to put Dardanelle up 7-6 with 31 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Pirates responded with a 74-yard yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 11:20 still in the second quarter to go up 14-7 after the 2-point conversion.
Gosnell made it 20-7 with 5:20 left in the half on a 21-yard run.
The Sand Lizards pulled within 20-13 on a 37-yard pass from Vega to Jorge Alvarez with 1:13 left in the half. The touchdown was set up by an interception by Seth Harper to give Dardanelle possession on its own 44.
With around a minute left in the first, the Pirates drove the field and scored on a 13-yard pass to set the halftime score with 32 seconds still on the clock.
In the second half, the Sand Lizards and Pirates exchanged blows.
Dardanelle pulled within 26-20 with 5:03 left in the third quarter on a 65-yard run by Vega, but Gosnell answered with a 5-yard touchdown pass plus 2-point conversion to go up 34-20 with 41 seconds left in the third.
Vega hit Williams on a 7-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-26 left in the game after a missed 2-point conversion.
Gosnell scored back-to-back unanswered touchdowns to go up 48-26 with 2:54 left in the game -- a lead that ended up being insurmountable.
The Pirates travel to Dumas on Friday.
