The Atkins Red Devils dominated the Dover Pirates to win the annual Rivals Cup 48-28 on Friday at Jack Berry Field.
The Red Devils (1-0) collected 329 yards in the first half as they raced to a 26-14 lead by halftime.
Atkins quarterback Zach Berkemeyer threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns in the first half as the Red Devils scored on every possession but the first half.
Berkemeyer threw two interceptions, the first on the first possession of the game. After forcing Dover to punt, Atkins went to work on its own 31. The Red Devils scored on a 69-yard pass to Devin Roberts. Atkins missed the 2-point conversion to make it 6-0 with 8:24 left in the first quarter.
The Pirates (0-1) fumbled the ball away on the next possession and Atkins cashed it in to go up 12-0 with 5:05 in the first. The Red Devils scored on a 10-yard but again missed the 2-point conversion.
Berkemeyer threw his second interception of the night, then Jon Greathouse crossed the goal line on a 24-yard keeper with 11:15 left in the half. Greathouse picked up the 2-point conversion to pull within 12-8.
Atkins made it 18-8 on its next drive. The Red Devils took over on the Dover 38 and crossed the goal line six plays later. Wyatt Coffman capped the drive with a 2-yard run to go up 18-8 after missing the 2-point conversion again with 8:51 left in the half.
The Red Devils made it 26-8 with 5:19 left in the half, but Dover answered late in the second to pull within 26-14.
After forcing the Pirates to punt, Atkins went 50 yards in five plays. Berkemeyer hit Michael Snowden on a 7-yard pass for the touchdown. The Red Devils missed the 2-point conversion again to make it 32-14 with 8:09 left in the third.
Michael Gibbons pushed the score to 38-14 with 3:46 still in the third quarter. This time, Atkins added the 2-point conversion to make it 40-14.
Hayden Duvall scored a 58-yard touchdown with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. The Red Devils picked up the 2-point conversion to make it 48-14.
Greathouse pulled the Pirates with 48-20 on a 38-yard rushing touchdown with 9:58 left in the game.
Dover's Kenny Ketcherside scored with around two minutes left to set the final score.
It is Atkins fourth year in a row to win the Rivals Cup.
Atkins hosts Conway Christian on Friday. Dover hosts Salem.
